Bonjour

Ok, so those youths in Istanbul started off not being happy that a park was to be converted to shopping centre and then the police waded in with water cannon and teargas and now it’s taken on a whole different slant. I suppose the protesters could be feeling left out as they are surrounded by a fine selection of countries -  Egypt, Syria, Iran, Georgia and on the other side Greece with their bail outs and austerity then north of them Bulgaria and Romania, with the problems of no European country wanting their workers to come to their country to work.  I am sure the government of Turkey can’t be that bad that they need their own Bosphorous spring?

So has someone taped all my calls, got a list of the calls I’ve made and a copy of all my emails? So what I say?  Surely us law-abiding tax-paying members of the public have nothing to fear from that data being available to security agencies?  It’s the same argument with regard to video surveillance. I am sure there have been unknown quantities of times that dastardly plots have been rumbled beforehand due to picking up emails with key words in them, I won’t mention any of those words or this could be the last Flyer you will see for a long time.  Ed Snowden decided to reveal what he knew in Hong Kong - was that because he believed the Chinese government would take care of him? The popular choice has historically been a city with an Ecuadorian Embassy and there isn’t one in Hong Kong, best of luck Mr Snowden.

So at time of writing Mr Mandela is still with us and so is Prince Phillip but I find it quite strange that the latter had to undergo surgery under general anaesthetic at his age.

And now I read Rupert Murdoch has filed for divorce from Wendy Deng, sounds like she may need a publishing deal for a book?

Does anyone know any dates for further industrial action by air traffic controllers this summer? Please do let me know so we can all avoid travelling on those dates.

A new Doctor Who and you only just got used to the last one, and this one’s Rory Kinnear son of Roy, who seemingly was in the last Bond movie.  So much for the speculation of the role being taken by a woman or a black actor. I wonder if they are thinking of using Daft Punk as a future set of villains.

Well it’s close to Pimms o’clock, be careful in that sun.

I was somewhat alarmed last month when a reader contacted me about my last article about bank accounts and haircuts etc.  At the end of his mail he said (kindly) how much he enjoyed my articles, but that they were a bit scary.  The reason I was alarmed by this is that one of my pet hates is when financial advisers go out of their way to scare the pants off their audience.  I have witnessed at first hand seminars where ‘prospects’ (oh I hate that expression so much) are warned about the taxman that may knock on your door in the middle of the night, or ‘if you don’t follow this advice I am duty bound to report the facts to the French tax authorities’.  Yes, some people are that unscrupulous.

A decent financial adviser should be looking to provide straightforward sound advice.  On that basis he or she will get a lot of business, for which he or she will be fairly remunerated.  Scaring clients into decisions that are rushed and ill-considered does no-one any favours.  Certainly not the client, but in the long term not the adviser or the brokerage he represents.

Reputation is key here.  If you have the clients’ interests at heart, you can’t really go wrong.  Maybe I’m  risking a stream of mails ‘outing’ me as an opportunistic chancer out to line his own pocket in the shortest time possible.  I’m really not sure what I would do if that happened; maybe realign my view of human nature.  Almost certainly quit immediately and go off to a mountain top to meditate.

For me what makes this job great is the occasional success story that never hits the bank balance.  The ‘off piste’ digging that results in a lady of later years starting to receive a UK state pension when she thought she wasn’t eligible, with a lump sum to boot for the years she missed out.  Or maybe the couple existing on very meagre resources who follow up a suggestion regarding a past employment and find out that are due a life changing pension. Things like this are what makes the job worth doing.  That and the joy of driving round the South of France meeting new people and making a difference.  I’ve also had the chance to help clients get cover from the French health service when they have previously been refused.  I can’t claim the credit for this myself, but I can claim credit for finding ‘a person who can’.

There is however a darker side.  I have also seen the power of money when someone dies.  Money can do bad things to people.  I have sat with elderly clients and planned their estates and where they want their money to go when their time comes.  When that day has arrived I have seen jealousy and greed.  It is rare, but it happens.  In life, plan for your death.  You won’t regret it.

At last the weather has warmed up a bit!  With all the rain that we have had many plants are now making amzing amounts of growth, particularly climbing plants.  Now is a good time to look at your climbing plants and cut back overhanging growth.  It is also a good time to look out for suckers (shoots that are coming from below a graft point) on fruit trees and roses, cut them off making a clean cut with clean, sharp secateurs.  Despite all the rain the surface of the soil can dry out quickly when we have some sunny weather so remember to keep an eye on anything that you have planted recently and water if necessary.

There are lots of plants in flower at the moment.  Two lovely spring flowers that will both take sun or semi shady positions are the blue Campanula persicifolia and the violet pink Geranium sanguineum.  The campanula will grow to about 1m high in flower while the geranium grows to about 60cm, both spread to make good ground cover and both are also available in a lovely white form.
