Bonjour

So the good farmers of Fanjeaux managed to hijack the Tour de France Tuesday, no doubt Froom, Thomas  and Sagan will be in trouble for inhaling the illegal substances, pepper spray.

I was going to say something about Trump but there seems there is no point, middle America are thumping their Bibles and not him. It appears Mr Juncker was intimidated by him but appeared to stay sober.

I suppose the new Pakistani President could go with the Obama slogan “Yes we Khan”

As you will have seen I am having a vide maison during this Sunday’s Routier vide grenier, lots of things, come along, it would be good to see you

There is a nice shop in the village now where you can get good coffee and soft drinks and some rather fine Moroccan Pastries, details below. Another good reason to pop along and explore and say hello.

Lost in France

20180717 1a03321If any of you were interested in how the dog survived his journey and adapted to his new life in England, the answer is amazingly well.

His escort said he was a dream and travelled well, that must have been for him (the dog not the escort) something like history repeating itself.  He was lifted into a cage next to some Spanish galgos and off he went.  His life as a racing greyhound must have been very similar, in and out of cages and vans, learning to switch off his senses and just adapt.

All this changed when he arrived.  Senses on overdrive.  And instead of, in France, being reluctant to go out he is almost behaving like a normal dog.  Not exactly running to the door wagging his tail, but at least getting up and looking prepared.  And he loves the outdoors….the streets, the garden gates, the people walking past, the people sitting drinking outside pubs and best of all, the lamp-posts. I’m constantly being stopped in the street by people who knew someone who had a racing greyhound, a racing whippet, an ex-trainer or just has another dog living somewhere else.  I’m offered life stories, histories and advice.

He’s been on his first bus, seen his first wave on the sea-shore and sniffed the air in his first enclosed outside space.

More about our first adventures back here later.  Oh, the fun I’ve had with Virginmedia….and we thought Orange was difficult!  Mind you EDF are having huge problems.  Apparently their website has been hacked and for almost a week I have found it impossible to log on to my account.  I have been told that the site is currently only accepting logons (or is that logson?) from email addresses with endings of .com and .fr, so no .co.uk, .de, .ch, .ru etc.

In my last article I highlighted the benefits of creating and maintaining a financial plan.  Creating a plan brings order to what you already have, adds clarity to what you still need to do to provide for future needs, and takes away the disappointments one feels when a goal cannot be achieved.

Everybody’s plan is different and is conditional on timescale, objectives and individual wants and needs. it would be different for say a couple with a young family, whose priority may be for children’s education. Moving further into middle age, thoughts turn more towards retirement, and securing the income needed to support those retirement plans. In the first instance, existing sources of pension provision is identified, whether that be from the state, or current or previous employer sponsored pension schemes. From this starting point, any shortfalls can be calculated, so that plans are put into place to build up savings with the ultimate aim of generating income from that capital.

Sometimes it will be possible to build sufficient additional savings from existing surplus income and sometimes not. Either way, one can see well in advance what is required to achieve the goal. It may be the solution is to revise the goal or save more. In many cases a change in the investment strategy adopted overcomes the shortfall. For instance, if the time horizon is long, say 20 years, then accepting a higher risk strategy can achieve the goal.

Clearly, tax and tax-efficient investing is important. If your ability to save is being eroded by tax implications on those savings, then it becomes far more difficult to achieve your goals. This is where a qualified financial planner adds value to the whole planning process.  A good financial planner will help you focus on your goals, identify any shortfalls, and come up with recommendations for overcoming them, using all available tax efficient saving methods. If income is to be drawn from those savings, drawing up an investment strategy both in the accumulation and decumulation stages is important to ensure the income can be maintained.

All this requires an ongoing commitment to ensuring the plan stays on-track, with regular reviews between the financial planner and client.

Moving into a later life stage, the priority may be to protect the assets already accumulated, to ensure the succession to heirs and beneficiaries. Once again, this requires tax planning as well as investment planning to ensure those you wish to benefit do so in the most tax efficient way possible. For those living outside of the UK, a discussion with a financial planner familiar with both UK inheritance taxation and that of the country of residence is crucial.

The Spectrum IFA Group in France supports in clients through all the different life stages, providing ongoing advice pertinent and relevant to our clients’ needs, so if you have personal or financial circumstances that you feel may benefit from a financial planning review, please contact me direct on the number below. Tech Talk

Smart home

What does smart mean? In simple terms it means a device connected to the internet and/or controllable from aecho and dot mobile phone or tablet.

One of the most common smart devices is the speaker, both Amazon and Google produce the top selling speakers at the moment, but the Amazon Echo smart speaker is slightly further ahead in functionality and services. (sorry I do not consider Smart TV’s to be in the Smart category – while they have internet access they are dumbest things on the planet and never get updated)

Until quite recently the Amazon echo speaker was not available in France and while you could bring one from the UK and it would work most of the services were unavailable here in France. Now however Amazon have released the Echo Dot, Echo and Echo Spot in France and have enabled all (or most) of the services. More devices will be available later this year.

So what can the Amazon Echo do?

Not only can it answer questions and speak to you, it can connect together many other devices and services.

It can play music from a number of different provides, some on subscription like Amazon Music, or Spotify but also form free sources like radio stations. Simply say Alexa (this is the name of the Amazon assistant). Alexa play BBC Radio 2, and Alexa will respond Playing BBC Radio 2 from Tunein.

Its also possible to join more than one echo into a group so you can have the same music playing in different rooms.

The Echo can also control smart lights, smart plugs, smart air-conditioner controls and many other smart devices.

You can order items from Amazon – Alexa order glue sticks.

You can play games and quizzes with Alexa, and have Alexa read books, news articles and many other things.

Its great in the Kitchen, while listening to your favourite radio or music while cooking you need to know how many grams in a pound simply say Alexa how many grams in a pound the music will reduce in volume and Alexa will tell you 1lb equals 453.59 grams.

Its also possible to call someone else with an Echo, and later this year when the Echo show comes to France you will be able to video call too.

The Google Smart Speaker (the Home) is not far behind, it links to very similar services and comes in a number of different sizes. The voice assistant is not quite as advanced as Amazon’s Alexa yet but its getting better every week.

A number of other manufactures are producing Smart speaker some are using Amazon’s Alexa services like Sonos and some like Apple are producing their own, the Apple Siri is a very long way behind the Amazon and Google assistant, but the sound quality of the speaker is one of the best available, but it comes at a VERY! high price.

While Smart speakers are not everyone’s idea of a good device to let into your home, some people are very worried about the security of a device that is always listening to you, there is so far no proven risk, the device does not send the sound to its online server until it hears its key word/Name, so only when you say Alexa does it send the next thing it hears to Amazons server.

There have been mistakes and odd occurrences, one user said Alexa send a message to Sarah, (Sarah being his boss), but then did not continue to give Alexa anything to send. Alexa waited a little while and then sent the next thing it heard which happened to be an argument with his wife – perhaps not the sort of thing you want to send to your boss. (this little bug has since been fixed so Alexa will only wait a few seconds, if it does not hear any sound it will stop and ask if you want to continue).

There have not been any hacks of the Amazon or Google smart speaker systems, both companies are keeping a very tight control over the services and encrypt the data the device is sending and receiving. So the risk is very low, far lower than the mobile phone in your pocket which also has a microphone and camera and always on internet service.

Its well worth trying it out I continually find myself asking Alexa things in ways I would not have thought of before, being able to play music all over my house is great too and the price is very good compared to Sonos or other multiroom speaker systems.

The Echo’s will be on special offer on the Amazon Prime days next week, it’s a good time to get one at a cheaper price.

Dear Mr. Hedges,

Thank you for your email.

We would be happy for you to put that information in your newsletter.

It is also worth noting that, for all of our outreach meetings, we advertise the number of place + an extra 20%. This is because we are finding that lots of people sign up to the event but don’t turn up on the evening, without cancelling beforehand. For example, last week we did a meeting in Cahors and nearly 80 people didn’t show up and didn’t tell us. We understand the demand for the events and want to be able to speak to as many people as possible, so we are encouraging people to cancel their place online if they can’t come to avoid unnecessary disappointment for others who may have wished to attend. Where we are very oversubscribed, we do also try – where possible – to find a larger venue. We are doing everything we can do make sure that as many people as possible can come to our events.

The British Embassy have also recently published a q and a for the top ten questions asked at the outreach meetings (please see attached) which may be of interest for your readers.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Kind regards,
