So Tiger Woods has caught the George Michael malady of falling asleep in the car, lets hope its not an indication of whats to come.

The  UK polls aren’t showing a big surge for the Lib Dems following their announcement to have another vote on Europe, strange? surely there are some millions of disgruntled remainers, maybe they are not saying anything to the pollsters

And Donald has kept up his form on his world tour, if only it were funny

Lost in France

The views expressed here are those of the writer and not of Steve.

snailAt one particular corner in the village there are scatterings of snail corpses.  It’s a bad enough sensation when you mistakenly stand on one with that inevitable crunch and you are a suddenly a killer.  But someone is throwing the snails from their garden against the wall of another house.  And I don’t think this is strictly necessary or the best way to dispense with them.

They could be gathered up, put in a jar and taken to be dropped off somewhere in the countryside.  Much kinder.  There are plenty of other ways to kill a snail if necessary without littering the area around someone else’s house.  How rude.

We all know that snails can be eaten if they are of the right type and if they are large enough to warrant the preparation of the flesh.  Here in France, the most common edible ones are Helix Pomatia and they will eat grape leaves.  Snails will taste of what they have eaten so if you are going to cook them, they need to be fed on something palatable, carrot is suggested, for 3 or 4 days.  They should be kept in a box and rinsed every day so that there is no inedible or unpleasant by-products on them.  You clean them one more time, put in the fridge and pop the cold frozen snails into a bouillon.  The French usually roast them too with garlic and butter, but you can try other herbs to suit.  It is the ultimate in slow-cooking but could possibly be a much nicer way of dealing with your garden snails.

We Brits are not very enthusiastic about eating them, but they are a rich source of Vitamins E, A, K and B12.  The French eat around 500 million snails a year.

Under the radar?

The question of residency features highly in requests I receive from prospective new clients looking for advice generally. These requests generally come from people who are looking to move permanently to France. I also receive requests from people who have lived in France for some time, either on a part-time basis (before returning to the UK or elsewhere for the remainder of the year), or on a full-time basis, living ‘under the radar’, so to speak.

In French tax law, the definition of domicile fiscal can fall under personal, professional, and economic conditions. To be considered resident in France for tax purposes, any ONE of the following conditions must be met:

1. Your main home is in France
2. You work in France, either on an employed or self-employed basis
3. Your centre of economic interest is in France. This can include your investments, or business interests are here

In addition, there is the commonly known means-test of 183 days in the year, which many people use as the chief determinant; like most things in France it’s not as simple as that. If you spend less than 6 months in France, but spend even less time in another country, then you can still be considered resident in France. Take the retired couple who spend their time between UK, France and Spain. If they lived in UK for 4 months, Spain 3 months and France for 5 months, they will be deemed to be resident in France because it is France where they have spent the most time during the year.

There are, of course, many different scenarios that determine residency, for instance the couple whose business is centred exclusively in UK, but live in rented property in France. All activity is in UK, yet because the couple switch on the home computer to check the company bank balance, this is construed as operating a business in France, thus definition 3 applies.

There are always grey areas, where tax residency can be in more than one country; in these cases, one hopes that a Double Taxation Treaty is in existence that would apply to ensure the person isn’t taxed twice.

What does concern me, though, are those people who have lived in France for a number of years, but not declared themselves resident. Common Reporting Standards were introduced in January 2016, whereby tax authorities from over 100 countries now share financial data between the host country and the country where the individual lives. Assuming that the individual declared him or herself non-UK resident on the grounds of moving to live in France, then any financial information (bank accounts, investments etc) will now be shared with the French tax authorities. Depending on that individual’s circumstances, they may suddenly appear on the fisc’s radar, who might just start to take an interest in them. Non-disclosure of financial information is becoming a big deal, so it is more important than ever that residency is determined and if that is in France, affairs are put in order to address any tax implications for savings and investments.

If you have personal or financial circumstances that you feel may benefit from a financial planning review, please contact me direct on the number below. You can also contact me by email at or call our office in Limoux to make an appointment. Alternatively, I conduct a drop-in clinic most Fridays (holidays excepting), when you can pop in to speak to me. Our office telephone number is 04 68 31 14 10.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Come and ride with us!

One in three people in the western world will suffer from some kind of cancer in their lifetime. Cancer and its treatment is difficult enough in your own country but in a new land and in a strange language it can be very, very, complex indeed.

In 2002, Cancer Support France (CSF) was set-up to help people in exactly that situation, offering both emotional and practical help. Now, with a vast pool of knowledge and resources at their disposal, it helps thousands of people across the country.

To raise awareness and funds for the charity and to support the fantastic and challenging work that they do for English speakers in France, CSF holds an annual event, ‘Cycle For Life’, and this year it is being held to celebrate the legacy and memory of the CSF Founder Linda Shepherd who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the charity and who sadly died of cancer in March 2017.

The ‘Cycle For Life’ ride will take place on June 22 to 25 starting in the Medieval city of Carcassonne and ending - with much celebration - at the coastal town of Sète, via the Canal du Midi, the Canal de la Robine and along a beautiful stretch of Mediterranean coast.

It is not a race and everyone can take it at their own pace and do as few or as many days as they would like.  The whole route is 200km but there are four stages of 50km, 40km, 50km and 60km and you can start at any one of them. It is all low-level, suitable for novice cyclists, and families and riders of all ages are welcomed.

‘Vie and Velo’ cycle tour company can offer help with bike hire, bike transport or booking accommodation.  Denise from ‘Vie et Velo” says “We are very excited to be supporting ‘Cycle for Life’ this year as it not only benefits a great cause, but highlights some of the fabulous cycling to be had in the Languedoc. We expect it will be a great event for cycling enthusiasts of all levels“.

So, come and join us in a gentle meander through beautiful French countryside in the sunshine, sharing wonderful lunch stops, and enjoy the fun, food and of course wine! It is free to take part and you can raise money, if you wish, by asking people to sponsor you or to make a donation on Details of the ride are on and with a month to go, it is not too late to take part.

Sponsors include Freewheeling France, LaFranglaiseWeb, Renestance and VideoProFrance.

Hi Steve,

It is difficult to understand why Stuart is so angry and, as a result, so incoherent.

The referendum delivered the result he and the 'head-bangers' wanted. We have

thus achieved the greatest example of national economic self-wounding and it is

now for the adults to clear up the mess and make the best of it.

In spite of this, Stuart is still clearly very angry and burbles meaninglessly about

people he doesn't like being unable to 'lace his boots'. What on earth does that mean ?

Does he even know ?

But the urgent question is how much more alarming would Stuart be if his side had lost

the argument ? Given that these despatches indicate a certain lack of calm and balance

could we ask, via your columns, that Stuart's carers review his medication and keep

him away from computers ?

Yours sincerely

Ireland as an independent nation, quite rightly resents any interference from Britain in its' affairs. As a Briton I equally resent interference from mouthy embittered anonymous paddies in the affairs of the UK.

Hi Everyone,

This is just a reminder that we are holding our fund raising garden fete for Languedoc Solidarité avec les Réfugiés ( on the 4th June and hope to see many of you!  The fete opens at 10am, you may be aware that parking can be difficult - you can park outside the garden or park your cars further along the road (there is an old quarry about 100m up the road to Citou) or you can park in the Esplanade d'Europe in the village and just walk up the road.  Guided tours of the garden will be available at 11am and 2.30pm, La Table d'Emilie will be serving food and drinks all day including quiches & salads etc at lunchtime.  Exceptionally, Imogen & Kate at Le Jardin Champetre will also be open next door and will give 10% of any plant sales to LSR.

There will be a raffle with some great prizes.   A Pimms aperitif is available at 4pm and the art auction will start about then, many local artists have generously donated work and I am attaching a catalogue.  The work will be available to view on Sunday.  If you know anyone else who might like the catalogue please do forward it.

For info, the full list of stands is as follows:

Info stand for LSR - Flower Power Game - Splat the rat - White Elephant Stall - Face Painting for kids - Jewellery for kids - Pin the tail on the donkey -
