Well we made it into the new one and I am sure you are well bonne annee’d out.

Yes, let’s say the Flyer is not early. But we can rejoice that medical conditions willing from now on I should be able to work to normal issue dates as I have replaced the computer that appeared for most of the time to want to work at it's own speed.

There is word going around that UK TV signals are being picked up on 90cm dishes, please could you confirm or deny if they are in your experience?  Or is it simply to do with the weather?  Thank's as it will, I am sure be helpful to many.

That's impressive that the Turkish authorities can track a video clip of a person passing through immigration 10 days ago, the marvels of modern science eh?

You have all been working your way around the sales? Maybe 2015 will see the red tape and restrictions on shop openings finally changing in France?

Have a splendid 2015 stay safe and healthy

Lost in France

So here we are, lost in France for another year.  It’s already been far longer than we expected.  We came here with the view of staying for a year to see how things went.  We are now into our third year and some things we’ve got used to and others we still haven’t.

I certainly haven’t got used to (and probably never will) hunters out in the fields killing animals for their own fun for 9 months of the year.  I know fox-hunting was supposedly banned in England but it appears to have crept back.  I know the UK government has decided to kill badgers for the sake of saving the cattle, but really I think it is just to appease the farming community and to be sure of their vote in the next election, as no scientific evidence has been produced to prove that the cull works.  This particular killing of badgers is being hindered quite substantially by ‘Stop the Cull’ organised by hunt saboteurs from all over the UK.

As far as I can see there are no hunt saboteurs in France.  I’m not even sure there are any French animal rights activists that are organising themselves into teams of masked super heroes to save various species of wild-life.  However, if they do exist, this should be one of the regions they should operate from.

The only organisation I know of is that run by Brigitte Bardot at which tries to inform and influence but which is nothing at all like

I was thinking about getting one of those high-pitched whistles used for dog training and then when I heard the familiar rattling of the bells around dogs’ necks, the shouts of the hunters or gun shots, I would blow the whistle to distract the hunting hounds whilst providing endless recall training for my own hound.  I wonder if you can still buy aniseed ball sweets?

French Tax Changes 2015

As always, the French parliament was very busy during December with its annual round of tax changes, although compared to previous years, there are only a small number of personal tax changes.

The income tax bands have been revised, including the elimination of the 5.5% tax band, which in theory should result in more people becoming non-taxpayers. However, due to the strength of Sterling against the Euro during 2014 (i.e. a gain of around 6% over the year), the reality is that many people reading this may actually end up paying more income tax in 2015. This makes it even more important to shelter investment capital and income to avoid paying unnecessary taxes.

There are no changes to wealth tax rates or to the capital gains tax rules for financial assets. Social contributions also remain at 15.5% for investment income and capital gains.

The rules relating to the taxation of capital gains from the sale of building land have been harmonised with those that apply to second properties. In addition, to further encourage the sale of building land, an exceptional reduction of 30% of the gain has been introduced, as well as some temporary exemptions from gift tax, in certain situations.

A more detailed summary of the tax changes can be found on our website at

In addition to the French tax changes, there are many other things that are happening this year. This includes the UK Pension Reform and the introduction of the EU Succession Rules, which are both major issues.

There are also the general economic prospects for the year ahead to consider. For example, what will happen with interest rates? Will the central banks be able to implement adequate policies to counteract the continuing possibility of deflation? How will investment markets react to these issues, as well as to elections in Greece and the UK?

Clearly, we have an ‘interesting’ year ahead and so now is a good time for people to seek advice, by having a review of their financial situation.

So as we go forward into 2015 and face the challenges that it presents, I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year.

If you would like to discuss how the French tax changes may affect you, or you would like to have a confidential review of your financial situation, please contact me by e-mail at or by telephone on 04 68 20 30 17.

Internet security

There is an ever growing threat to the security of your computer and protecting your computer is very important.

Its a good idea to use good and reliable virus scanner like AVG, the New 2015 version available to download for FREE.

However a little extra help is always a good idea and especially at the moment, as Malicious software seams to be on the rise again.

You need something that can detect and remove Spy or Malware and as a backup/safeguard or as a secondary check to your virus scanner. I recommend - Malwarebytes, this amazing program can find and remove things that virus scanners and other security software misses. It come is two forms the basic version is FREE and can detect and remove threats from your computer, But you have to run scans yourself.

The Pro Version costing 23 euros for a year has the same scanning and removal capabilities but also has a protection module to constantly monitor the computer and automatic scanning on a schedule you set. Very good value for money, you can get both the free and Pro here

I suggest every reader downloads and runs Malwarebytes, many computers are infected or have malicious software on them that is a serious risk and many do not show any signs of problems. If you can find and remove the threat before it takes hold and does any damage then you are less likely to have problems in the future.

Run a Malware scan once a week – Every week to stay safe online.

If you need help or have any questions about your computer please give me a call or send me an email for advice. or Telephone 05 61 60 84 23.

Bruce Taylor.

Bridge Problem.

You have bid well to get to six hearts. The defence lead the Ace and King of clubs and you ruff with the Queen of trumps. You cash the Ace of trumps and your left-hand opponent shows out. Can you play the hand as well as you bid it ?

This is the magic disappearing trump carefully. It looks like you might have to lose a trump trick as well as the club that has already been won but there is an answer if spades break 3/2. Cash the Ace of diamonds and cross to Dummy's spade suit. Now you must continue to run the suit until your right-hand-opponent is forced to ruff (he has only trumps left). You can now over-ruff with the King of trumps and lead a small trump to Dummy, claiming twelve tricks and slam made.

In the garden now is a good time to take advantage of the relatively mild weather and make a head start on clearing borders before spring bulbs start poking through; clear away dead leaves, get the weeds out (especially perennial weeds before they have a chance to get established) and add some compost.  Prune off unwanted suckers from around trees.  And, January is a good time to get garden machinery serviced ready for the spring.

There are perennials and shrubs which flower in the winter but interest in the garden at the moment is often from the structure provided by different plants.  One photograph shows a planting of ornamental grasses which have browned off but are still looking good, these will be cut back to the base at the end of February.  The second photograph shows a planting of Mediterranean native shrubs (Cistus, Dorycnium, Phlomis etc) which offers contrasts of grey and green foliage.

For any garden queries do get in touch with Gill Pound ( 04 68 78 43 81 or ). La Petite Pépinière de Caunes 21, av de la Montagne Noire (route de Citou) 11160 Caunes-Minervois. The nursery and garden don't have regular opening hours during the winter months but we are always open by appointment, just phone or email to arrange a time if you would like to visit.  We are currently in the process of up-dating our website (thanks to Bruce Taylor) so please have a look at for an up to date list of plants we  propose this year and lots of new photos.
