It's that time again when there are Christmas markets smaller than the poster that advertises them, but there are also the Foires au Gras. If you missed Limoux, Belpech and Castelnaudary then try to get along to Rieux–Minervois Saturday (14th),  Mazères (Ariege) on Sunday (15th) or Carcassonne Sunday 22nd. The latter could be a good one because it ties in with the “Exotic weekend” December 20th to 22th, organised by the Aude young farmers. It’s a marche du terroir with tastings and some other silliness including pig races and grown men doing the sack race. Head to the car park of The Dome. Free entry.

And for those of you more interested in  truffles here’s where you need to be:

Moussoulens 14 December and 4 December

Talairan 21 December, 11 January and 1 February

Villeneuve-Minervois 28 December, 18 January and 8 February

So Mr Mandela finally gave world TV broadcasters the opportunity to dust off and air the programmes they made a few months ago. The BBC seem to have sent anyone with a tinge of colour and a few white folk to report on what I would have imagined would have been a huge worldwide event but somehow it feels to me as if its going off like a damp squib. Yes I know Obama shook the hand of a Castro and someone had the terrible job of organising who sat where. Not dissimilar I would imagine to organising a large family's wedding seating plan only on a monumental scale.

It did look like the early days at the London Olympics in the stadium, clearly the good and the great couldn’t be bothered to turn up as the better seats were all but empty.

Maybe its just been caused by them having the memorial event before the funeral? Strange idea.

I am not sure why I didn’t adjust the calendar to take into account Christmas but the next Flyer will be sent out somehow on Christmas day, if you feel you would like to contribute in someway, send me your text and it could be a story. I am sure there are many who would like the excuse to pick up a tablet twixt 25 and 31 December to have a read of some of your ramblings?

Have a good one

Can you afford to advertise in the Flyer? Can you afford not to?

Christmas is coming ……

Yes it is – really! So if you haven’t yet started to write your Christmas cards, then you need to get your pen out - or your fingers on the keyboard, if you’ve moved onto E-cards.

The Christmas advertising is in full swing on UK TV. Is it my imagination or have the adverts become longer and more artistic? When we saw the first couple of adverts, it was almost as If we were watching a ‘mise-en-scène’ unfold before our eyes. As the next ones were shown, we started a little game to see if we could guess which company was advertising. We didn’t get any right, which shows that we are completely out of touch with what is being sold in UK shops these days. But no problem, we live in France and so as long as we can get our oysters and Blanquette, then that’s fine.

The Christmas carol concert season is also in full swing, something that we Brits love. I think this article will be published the day after the carol concert at the Basilique Saint Nazaire in La Cité and so if you did get there, I hope you enjoyed it. If you didn’t make it – or perhaps you want more – come along to the Service of Lessons & Carols that is taking place at the church of Saint André, Alet les Bains, on Wednesday, 18th December at

7.00 pm. The service will be followed by mulled wine and mince pies and another ‘highlight’ is that you will see me singing in the choir!

OK I have to put Christmas aside for now and get back to my day job……

I thought that Rob’s ‘no frills’ description of assurance vie (or AV, for short) in his last article, was great. There is little that I can add, except to say that with the true ‘Expat’ AV, we have a variety of companies that we can use because as The Spectrum IFA Group is independent, we are not tied to any particular bank or other company. The importance of this shouldn’t be dismissed because ‘one size does not fit all’. Everyone’s situation is different and a very important part of our job is to find the right product for you. I do not want my clients to have sleepless nights over their investments and for that matter, I certainly do not want to have sleepless nights either!

And now a brief word on tax …….

The French budget is still winding its way through the parliamentary process and a summary of what the government originally proposed in September can be found on our website at:

However, there have already been considerable changes made to the proposals, during the parliamentary debates that have taken place, particularly as concerns the reform of capital gains tax for property. Since the National Assembly and the Senate cannot reach agreement on the text, the bill will now be considered by a Joint Committee from 5th December. Who knows what the outcome will be, but it will be finalised before the end of the year and I will write again on this, early in the New Year.

So for now, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and for those of you travelling to spend time with family, let’s hope those journeys are trouble-free and flights, ferries, etc. run as planned.

If you would like to receive confidential advice on any aspect of financial planning, please contact me either by telephone on 04 68 20 30 17 or by e-mail at

The Spectrum IFA Group advisers do not charge any fees directly to clients for their time or for advice given, as can be seen from our Client Charter at

 Tech Talk

Declutter your PC

A cluttered hard drive can be disorderly and slow to retrieve data, but it can also be a security hazard. This is especially true of any software on your PC that you rarely use. Perhaps you installed a free demo, or your computer came with a lots of software installed.

The chances are good that the software you’re not actively using isn’t being updated, which means it leaves your PC open to exploits (Trojans, Viruses, Malware etc.)

Just as you regularly remove out of date food and uneaten leftovers from your refrigerator (maybe?), any time is a good time to rid your PC of useless and unwanted programs. Here are some tips to help you purge all that from your PC.

Unused applications

In Windows, go into the Control Panel, look under Programs, and click Uninstall a program. A window will display a list of all the applications installed on the PC. By default the list is organized alphabetically, but you can click the Publisher, Installed On, Size, or Version column heading to sort the list accordingly.

A quick way to get to this is to use Ccleaner and click on Tools on the left.

If your goal is to free up space on your PC, you should start by sorting the list of applications by size. You’ll be able to quickly identify which software is taking up the most space on your hard drive, and remove the applications you don’t need or use.

The built-in Windows tool isn’t always the best, though, and sometimes the uninstallation process leaves trace elements of applications behind. For a more thorough house keeping, look to a utility such as Revo Uninstaller.

Revo can scan your system for remnants left over from the standard uninstall – orphaned files, Windows services, file associations, shell extensions, and other components - and forcibly remove them. A free version of the software is available.

Please take care not to remove anything you are using or software that protects your computer or software used for the internet. i.e. AVG anti virus, Malwarebytes, Java, Adobe Flash, Microsoft Office etc...

If in doubt leaving it on the computer is the safest option.

It a very good idea to make sure you have a full backup before you start removing things!

If you need help or have any questions about your computer please give me a call or send me an email for FREE advice. or Telephone 05 61 60 84 23.

Several nights of frost recently and snow on the Montagne Noire - winter is certainly with us.  Once we start to have frost it is a good time to clean up your bird table (if you haven't done so already) and start to provide some winter food for birds, providing food will help many birds to make it through the winter.  High energy fat balls (remove the plastic mesh), half coconuts and seeds are all welcome.

Most DIY shops and garden centres stock a range of bird food or you can buy online, for example from the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux -  Now is also a good time to install nest boxes for the spring.  Remember too that places in the garden such as compost piles, bonfire heaps, hedgerows etc may be providing winter shelter for animals such as hedgehogs, frogs & toads.

Look out for plants which provide good food for birds during the winter such as the native Strawberry Tree/Arbousier (Arbutus unedo), Alaterne (Rhamnus alaternus) and Filaire (Phillyrea angustifolia and latifolia) and think about planting these for the future.  I have a list of plants that are good for wildlife, if you would like a copy just drop me an email.

For any garden queries do get in touch with Gill Pound ( 04 68 78 43 81 or ). La Petite Pépinière de Caunes 21, av de la Montagne Noire (route de Citou) 11160 Caunes-Minervois. Open during the winter months by appointment.
