Bonjour

Donc, the organisers of Rio 2016 Olympics seem to have largely survived the potential problems. Apart from maybe a robbery or two and a made-up robbery.  It’s a shame the IOC member accused of ticket touting hadn’t done it with about half a million more tickets.  Or perhaps they should have made each of the events a Pokemon Go PokeStop.  Then stadia would look more respectable.

Actually I just had a look at the ticket website and it appears you can buy best seats for about 250€ and maybe even seats at a quarter of that for the Athletics over the next few days.

Then there is Team GB and the world is saying how did they do it?  No doubt the Russians will be having a say - maybe about doping?

It would appear that the funding strategy is working perfectly and at a cost of approximately £5.5 m for each medal seems to be a price well paid, especially as its coming from lottery funds.

The American Olympic committee give athletes $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze medals won, but then the government taxes that, the sponsorship money and the value of metals in the medal itself!  If they keep that up Team GB may be able to topple them too.

Well you see what happened when you don’t split UK up? How many Welsh medals have there been and Northern Irish?  Now it’s time to get a Team UK footie team and win something.

I am not really sure Burkini banning is going to serve France well.

I thought I would share with you a letter I received from my local MP.  I wrote to her in the heat of the moment when some of us believed we could change the outcome of the referendum by refusing to trigger Article 50 since so many people (once the choice had been made) either refused to believe it was the right thing to do or suddenly realised they had been lied to and the choice they had made was the wrong one.

My local MP is Diane Abbott, she has been the Labour MP in Hackney North and Stoke Newington since time immemorial or since 1987 which is a long time in politics.  So she is a survivor, she knows how to be diplomatic to the point of banality.  This is her letter to me:

3 August 2016

I want to thank you for writing to me about Brexit.  There is no doubt that this is one of the most important decisions we have made in our recent history.

I want to reassure you I am fully focused on defending the interests of my constituents.  Although the vote was a narrow one to Leave, my constituents voted 78% to 22% to Remain.  Many are distressed and anxious at the outcome.  You have my commitment that I will continue to combat all forms of racism and xenophobia which have been given free reign during the Referendum campaign and in the period since.

I want to address the main substantive point of your letter; that I should not trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.  Unfortunately, I do not think there will be a Parliamentary vote on this issue as leading members of the Government have suggested they will simply use the Royal Prerogative.  This by-passes any opportunity for a Parliamentary vote.

We know that the Leave campaign deliberately distorted the facts, for example by pretending there would be an additional £350 million per week which could be spent on the NHS.  I led a debate in Parliament exposing this blatant falsehood.

I am not at all suggesting that a majority vote, however narrow, should be overturned.  Ordinary people, on both sides of the debate already feel they are ignored by the elites, including the Westminster elite.

But it is a general rule that if a body of people, in this case the entire electorate, vote to reject one course of action such as remaining in the EU, the same body of people should vote on the alternative.  That means that the terms of any Brexit agreement should also be put to a popular referendum for endorsement or rejection.  That is the democratic course.

Be assured I will continue to argue Parliament should vote on Article 50.  I will also argue for the right of the electorate to vote on any deal that is finally agreed.

I wonder what the response would have been from a Tory Brexit MP – does anyone have one?  And you can see how she has survived this long.

At this time of the year, it’s pretty difficult for anyone to think about financial planning. The sun is shining, families

are visiting, or perhaps we are taking our own vacations somewhere else. Tax, investment markets, pensions and

inheritance planning are usually the last things that people want to think about, but this year is proving to be

a pretty exceptional year.

September brings the rentrée and it’s also a time when reasonable assumptions can usually be made about

what might happen in financial markets over the rest of the year -although this year may be a challenge!

There is at least one ‘big political event’ up ahead that might keep the markets guessing and who knows what the

outcome of the US Presidential Election will be? Can anyone ever depend again on forecast polls to gain some

insight, after the shock result of the EU Referendum?

On the UK, could there also be a General Election? If not this year, next year? Will Theresa May really be able to

resist the pressure that is likely to ensue and stay firm to the statement she made in her leadership campaign not

to call a snap election?

Brexit is of course a big question – will it happen or not? If so, when? No-one really knows, but in the meantime,

markets remain on high alert and sensitive to the potential outcomes of a Brexit.

As a result of Brexit, the Bank of England has drastically cut its forecast for UK growth for 2017. The interest rate

has also been cut to a historic low of 0.25% and this may not be the last reduction for this year. Combined with the

prospect of an increase in inflation, due to a weaker Sterling, the prospect for any meaningful return on cash has

diminished still further. How will this affect you? What will happen if interest rates stay permanently lower and

not just for longer?

There are other things that could affect the way that markets perform over the rest of the year and into 2017.

What is the prospect for global equity and bond markets? Are we reaching the peak of the current market cycle?

Should you be taking short-term ‘protective’ actions to protect your wealth for the long-term? Do you need to take

action with your pension funds to make sure these last as long as you do?

All very interesting questions and fortunately, we are again holding our popular financial seminars across France –

Le Tour de Finance - Bringing Experts to Expats”, which is a perfect opportunity for you to discuss some

of these questions directly with experts. Our industry experts will be presenting updates and outlooks on a broad

range of subjects, including:

Financial Markets

Assurance Vie

Pensions/QROPS

French Tax Issues

Currency Exchange

The date for the local seminar is Friday, 7th October 2016 at the Domaine Gayda, 11300 Brugairolles.

Places are limited and must be reserved, in advance. This venue is always very popular and so early booking is recommended.

In practice, financial advice is needed more than ever in uncertain times. Doing nothing can often be an expensive

mistake. Hence, if you would like to attend the seminar or would anyway like to have a confidential discussion with

one of our financial advisers, you can contact us by e-mail at limoux@spectrum-ifa.com

or by telephone on 04 68 31 14 10. Alternatively, drop-by to our Friday morning clinic at our office at

2 Place du Général Leclerc, 11300 Limoux, for an initial discussion.

One final thing to share with you is the news that our Languedoc team is expanding. Sue Regan has joined us as

an adviser and so now we have six advisers covering this region. Sue lives at Cruzy and so is well placed for visiting

clients in Narbonne, Beziers and the surrounding areas. She can be contacted directly by telephone on

04 67 24 90 95 or by email at sue.regan@spectrum-ifa.com. Sue will also be at the Gayda event with Derek, Rob

and myself.

The Spectrum IFA Group advisers do not charge any fees directly to clients for their time or for advice given, as

can be seen from our Client Charter at

You now have ten tricks but you must be careful if trumps break 4/1 as, if you leave a trump out, the defence may be able to cut you off from your diamond winners. Cash the Ace and Queen of spades. If trumps break, then cross to the King and take your tricks. Bitdefender Offers Free Anti-Ransomware Tool

Worried about ransomware locking up your Windows computer? Antivirus firm Bitdefender has a free tool that may offer some relief.

The latest version of Bitdefender's free Anti-Ransomware tool offers at least limited protection against CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt, three of the most common strains of encrypting ransomware.

It does so by mimicking the "markers" that ransomware places on infected systems to prevent a second infection, and also limits unknown applications from launching from unusual locations on a system's hard drive.

Download from http://download.bitdefender.com/am/cw/BDAntiRansomwareSetup.exe

The tool installs quickly and runs mostly in the background, although you can configure it to run on computer startup and minimize the interface screen.

To make sure you don't become a victim of encrypting ransomware, follow a few simple steps.

1. Back up your computer's hard drive at least once a week. Daily is better, and more than one backup drive is better still.

2. Keep your computer's operating system and applications fully patched.

3. Don't open any email attachments you weren't expecting. Many people have been infected by fake bills and invoices; if you must view an attachment, download it to a spot on your hard drive, then browse to it, right-click it and inspect it with antivirus software before opening it.

4. Install and run robust antivirus software that includes browser and email protections, and make sure it automatically updates its malware definitions at least once a day.

Problem repairing Virus Scanning software

Are you having problems with your virus scanner and need to remove it to reinstall it? Sometimes it gotten its self into such a state that it cannot be removed or that bits of it are left over after the uninstall. Then you need a dedicated tool to remove the anti virus program. Bitdefender publish a complete list of all well know anti virus and security program and the forced removal tools need to remove them. USE WITH EXTREME CARE always try to uninstall first.

 readers write

Hi Steve

Thought we should warn your readers that there appears to be a scam going on in Gers.   We were approached in a lay-by near L’Isle Jourdain by two Irishmen and a small boy aged probably around 12-13 with bright ginger hair, driving a white left-hand drive van with a sliding side door.   They spun us a hard luck story about their bag with credit cards, cash and driving licences having been stolen and asked for help to let them get back to Calais to catch their ferry.   They offered to let us take a photo of one of their passports and to give us their address in Ireland as security for any help we could give.   They were luck in that we were in an extremely good mood, having seen Jamie Cullum at Marciac the previous evening and also were sympathetic as our motor home had been broken into several years ago.    However, having parted with some cash - fortunately not a huge amount - and gone on our way, we began to question why anyone Irish would be driving a left hand drive van (brand new by the way) and also why if they had been holidaying in Toulouse as they said, they were near L’Isle Jourdain and not on their way north.   They have all the angles covered in their story, including having reported the theft to the gendarmes, having contacted the embassy and having tried to get money sent over from Ireland by friends and  family via Western Union, the problem with the latter being each of them was left with only one piece of identification and Western Union apparently require two.

Needless to say, the address they gave does not exist and we have no idea whether the passport was genuine.   We did approach the embassy to ask them to confirm or otherwise, but no response.   We also believe the number plates on the van were false as they do not relate to English, Irish or French norms.

We’re not normally this gullible but this might stop anyone else from being taken in.

Patricia

Hi ladies and gents,

I’m contacting you about the Referendum result and the way in which the UK Government proposes to trigger Article 50, ie. the start of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Theresa May wants to use ancient (archaic) Royal Prerogative to do this, instead of allowing our Sovereign Parliament to decide.

The Royal Prerogative is a power delegated by Her Majesty to the Government, to be used in areas of national policy/interest where the UK Parliament has not enacted legislation. In this instance, it seems that it suits the Government's sectional and party political interest to use the Royal Prerogative.

This is not the same as being in the best interests of the UK and its citizens.

The rights and benefits of ordinary UK Citizens were hardly mentioned during the referendum, lost in the general rhetoric about trade, influence and taking back control.

These rights include important personal freedoms:

to study; to work; to live; to retire, anywhere in the EU, provided you are not a burden on the country you live in.

We all have these freedoms.

In addition there are benefits and protections that give practical effect to the freedoms we enjoy including: pension protections; health care arrangements; non-discrimination at work & about property ownership where you live; voting rights in local elections in your country of residence.

These rights and protections apply to all UK Citizens and millions of UK Citizens take advantage of these rights every year.

Parliament granted us these rights by enacting legislation

I believe that, as Parliament has granted us these rights, it is for Parliament to decide when, how and under what circumstances they are taken away.

The Government disagrees and is being challenged in the courts.

The enforced removal of citizenship rights from 65 million people is completely unprecedented in a modern democracy.

This campaign seeks funding to make sure ordinary UK Citizens are involved, represented and can have a say.

https://www.crowdjustice.co.uk/case/parliament-should-decide/

is a legal challenge fronted by my husband Grahame (whom most of you good people know), in which he and other interested parties seek to defend your and our rights, and ensure that control (highly valued by all sides of the Referendum argument) is not snatched away.

This is one of the most important constitutional cases of our time.

It will decide whether it is for an appointed executive (the Government) or our democratically elected Sovereign Parliament to decide when and how the UK leaves the EU.

You might say that you don’t see how the Royal Prerogative is the appropriate mechanism to deal with the current circumstances.

In the words of a well-known fictional civil servant, “You may say that, I couldn’t possibly comment”.

Please support and share, your country needs you!

I’ll keep you informed of progress.

All the very best, Lyn

Hi,

Please ignore this if you voted for Brexit.  If however you voted ‘Remain’, this might interest you.  I can vouch for the authenticity of this campaign.
