Bonjour

So, three British teams make It through to the final 16 in Euro 16, that’s almost a quarter of the total, remarkable.

French cement maker Lafarge entered into deals with armed groups in Syria, including the Islamic State (IS) group, in order to protect its business interests in the country, French daily Le Monde reported Tuesday.

Was it just me who had a quiet inside thought that Michael Steven Sandford the Brit from Dorking who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump should be given a knighthood? Rather than 10 years in the slammer

I think maybe I am not supposed to say that?

Lost in France

I’ve just tried BlaBlaCar and it works!  Why am I surprised?  Well, I guess that could be something to do with title of my piece.

The strikes have been sort of off and on but not quite affecting this region.  But with a long weekend abroad planned and not having flown from Toulouse before I was wondering if a train and bus would work, if the flights would work, if there would be petrol etc. etc.  I had originally worked out the route going from Carcassonne station to Toulouse, then taking a shuttle bus or navette to the airport but thought I would also post an alert on BlaBlaCar.

I found a lady and her daughter who were offering a ride from Carcassonne to Colombiers area of Toulouse and as that isn’t far from Blagnac I asked if they could drop me there.   She was going out of her way slightly but agreed to do it without quibble.  Result.

The return journey was more difficult as very few rides were being offered either from Blagnac or from that area of Toulouse, most offered were from the centre.  I had read there may have been a train strike on the day I was travelling so as time went on I was getting resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to get a lift or a train and would have to consider another solution.  Stupidly I didn’t recharge my Ipad as I left my accommodation and as I sat at the airport, scanning my emails with more Toulouse – Carcassonne alerts I was getting increasingly desperate.  With about 10% of battery an alert popped up from someone who was offering a ride from the airport just as my plane landed.  She had three places, one was already taken, but she said she would give me a ride if my plane was on time.  5%.  Then she said she would wait for another 30 minutes and that I should call her when I got to Toulouse.  In order to get her phone number I had to make an immediate payment via paypal and I would get her number and start communicating by text.  4%.  So panic over and with texts now working, which was lucky as the plug socket I’d discovered as I scanned the walls in the airport didn’t work.

So there you go, Carcassonne Railway Station – Toulouse Blagnac Airport - Carcassonne Tridome parking in for the princely sum of €15.24 and I got to practise my French too.

Planning for Certainty in an Uncertain World

At the time of writing this article, the UK Referendum on membership of the EU is only a week away. As the polls

swing from one side to the other, uncertainty increases, in part driven by sensationalist media reporting. It seems

that even football hooliganism might have the potential to affect the outcome of the Referendum, if England is

disqualified from Euro 2016.

If the vote is to remain, in theory, life should go on as we know it. In practice, the schism created within the

government over the EU question could make things unworkable. The next UK general election is scheduled for

May 2020, but could we see this brought forward?

If the vote is to leave, no-one knows at this stage what this will mean in practice, as it will depend on any exit terms

negotiated. If nothing is agreed within two years, then the UK will just exit the EU without any special terms at all,

unless all the remaining countries agree to extend the deadline. However, will any of the Member States be

favourable to granting special ‘club membership terms’ to any country that leaves the club?

For those of us living outside of the UK, how do we plan for our financial future, amidst all this uncertainty? Well the

saying, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”, comes to mind here. As difficult that thought may seem to be now,

financial planning is for the long-term and part of that planning is managing through ‘events’ that occur – including

the big political and economic ones.

So whether the UK is in or out of the EU, what really should be considered in planning for a secure financial future

is what works best for us according to our country of residence. We already have many clients who are non-EU

nationals living happily in France (and in the other countries in which we are based). Whilst there may be some

different home tax issues to consider, the financial planning that we carry out for these clients is no different to what

we do for our British clients.

Last month, I wrote about tax-efficient savings and investments in France and if you did not see this, the article can

be found at http://www.spectrum-ifa.com/tax-efficient-savings-investments-france/. All the savings and investment

products mentioned are widely used by people of all nationalities – being an EU national or not, makes no difference.

A very important part of planning for a secure financial future is to have an appropriate investment strategy for financial

assets. Your attitude to investment risk and objectives for your capital are major factors to be taken into

account when recommendations for any investments are made. For expatriates, it is also important to consider

currency and mobility needs.  Investment recommendations should only be made following an in-depth review

of your personal situation. Everyone’s situation is different and there is no ‘one plan fits all’ facility.

In practice, financial advice is needed more than ever in uncertain times. Doing nothing can often be an expensive

mistake. Hence, if you would like to have a confidential discussion with one of our financial advisers, you can contact

us by e-mail at limoux@spectrum-ifa.com or by telephone on 04 68 31 14 10. Alternatively, drop-by to our Friday

morning clinic at our office at 2 Place du Général Leclerc, 11300 Limoux, for an initial discussion.

The above outline is provided for information purposes only and does not constitute advice or a recommendation

from The Spectrum IFA Group to take any particular action on the subject of the investment of financial assets

or on the mitigation of taxes.

The Spectrum IFA Group advisers do not charge any fees directly to clients for their time or for advice given, as

can be seen from our Client Charter at

Caretaker Wanted

.... for a family holiday home located in Cuxac Cabardes.  Ideally, this would suit a locally based and flexible individual (or couple) who are prepared to do as much or as little as required from one year to the next.  This is a family home (not a commercial venture) so is likely to involve some routine tasks involving the garden, swimming pool and car, as well as one off maintenance and housekeeping/cleaning activities before and after family visits.  Drop off and collection from Carcassonne airport using the owner car would also be very helpful.

If you are interested in finding out more please email us on afmcook@btinternet.com please provide details of: relevant experience,  where you live, why this might interest you and how we can contact you to find out more.

Regards

Alistair

You are in 6NT. The defence lead the Queen of hearts. You have a few entry problems. Can you solve them?

Solution.

Don’t be tempted to cash the King of spades and finesse the Jack of spades as you will be left without an entry to Dummy if it loses. It is better to play the two from hand and finesse the Jack. If this loses you can win the return and overtake the King of spades with the Ace and enjoy twelve tricks. If the Jack holds however, you have now two entries to Dummy to finesse the clubs twice. Split honours is a 75% chance.

Password Recovery

We all need passwords, everything its seems now wants a password and they all want you to have a different password for every website, service and login. We all know how important it is to have a good (strong) password or as the “new” term that’s being use a Pass Phrase, longer than a normal password.

Many people have problems remembering a password, so what should you do?

Simple answer - WRITE it down, keep a small book with all your passwords and then keep the book in a safe place.

Oh I hear the shouts – But we were always told NOT to write it down.

Here what the old System admin people actually said: Do not write down your password and then leave it under the keyboard.

What they meant was: Write down your password and keep it in a safe place.

So what do you do if the password really is lost/forgotten?

You use the password recovery system, some sites you click on forgotten password, others I cannot login, or having trouble logging in or something in a similar vain.

You will then get the option to recover your password, some will send you a password via email, others will send you a password reset via email, but increasingly sites want to send an SMS message to your mobile phone containing a code, you type the code into the web site and then it allows you to reset the password.

Then method of using a mobile SMS is a form of TWO Factor authentication, it make doubly sure that it’s the real person who owns the account and not a hacker.

So its VERY! important to keep your account details and especially your mobile number upto date on the accounts page of the site or service you are using. In many cases someone else may have setup your account and used their mobile number or did not enter a mobile number at all or it has an old number from a few years ago.

If something happens to your account, if someone tries to hack your account or if you forget the password and you have not updated your detail then there is a very good chance you will permanently lose access to that account. If its you main email address or even something you’ve bought from (online music, audio books, ebooks ect…) then you may also lose access to those as well and this can be extremely frustrating and stressful.

If you are worried about your account being hacked and want an added level of protection you can turn on TWO Factor authentication in your account settings. This will every time you logon send an SMS with a code to your mobile phone, which you then type into the logon screen. It sounds like hard work and YES it is and it happens every time. But you soon get used to it and in some case certain devices can be granted/trusted status so that they do not require it while in your home location but only ask for it if you move away from home.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep your details up to date for each account you have, weather its email, bank, phone, facebook, or any other login.

If you need help or have any questions about your computer please give me a call or send me an email for advice.
