Bonjour

Is it possible that the self-driving car  and the package delivering drone could work in the Aude and Ariege, I mean a big city maybe but in France “profond” surely not.

Google are busy patenting a technology to communicate with pedestrians for these cars, I thought we had that already, the horn.

And as for the delivery drones are the skys to be awash with flying bedsteads distributing parcels to everyone? Well it cant be everyone, the clip shows touchdown in the garden, what if you live in a flat with no balcony, you are undeliverable too? Or charge an excess as in the Dom Tom or the Hebrides.

If no one is in it leaves it in the garden? Or just a card? Oh dear more noise and more confusion, what progress.

So two extremely popular holiday destinations for Russians have been shut down to them within a month, so where will they go? Spain should do well, I cant imagine the bandb’s of our region will be benefitting.

Lost in France

The space I left from a month ago has returned.  The builder came back and his men did the repair work.  His builders worked very hard and made a real effort to do what was required but they left the place a mess.  Part of their job is to leave the work place clean and tidy when they have finished.  There was rubble on the roof terrace and rubble on my neighbour’s roof terrace.  There was rubble in the gutter and they cracked the cement surrounding the chimney.  The excuse he gave for them not clearing the workplace was because it was getting dark and they couldn’t see!   But ingratiatingly as ever the boss man said he would send his guys back to do the additional repairs.  We point blank refused.  If they can’t get it right the first time, or the second what chances are there for a third attempt?  After he had gone we found they had also forgotten to lay some lead flashing down a ridge next to our neighbour’s roof.  FFS!

He asked for the balance of his payment and I said I was unhappy to pay the full amount due on account of the fact that we had to tell them what to do not once, but twice and they still managed to miss something not least the amount of stress they caused us.  He baulked at my first offer and we negotiated a reduced payment.  The payment was reduced further than I originally planned owing to my bad arithmetic (a simple subtraction) and his bad eye-sight.  For once my mistake was in my favour.

12th February 2008  -   Hi, my name is Rob Hesketh, and I am a financial adviser. (Murmurs of discontent echo round the Aude…).  Cheer up; I could have been an estate agent.

That is how I launched myself on the unsuspecting readership of the Aude Flyer with article number 1.  Seven years and nine months later, this is article number 100, and I have finally decided to put you out of your misery and retire my quill and ink (I actually think I do have both those things somewhere)

.

Looking back at the last  99 articles, I think that overall the quality ranged from dire to reasonable, with the majority being somewhere in-between.  They have nearly all been fun to write, but I am eternally grateful that I didn’t have to rely on journalism to find my way in the world.

I’m afraid the good news stops there though.  I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not retiring.  In fact I’m looking forward to being a continuing part of the growing organisation that is The Spectrum IFA group.  In 2006, when I joined Spectrum, there was only one adviser covering all of South West France.  Now we are about to welcome our third adviser in the Aude alone.  Daphne and I will soon be joined by Derek Winsland, a vastly experienced and highly qualified UK adviser who has wisely decided to relocate to our part of the world.  Between us we will look after Spectrum clients new and old throughout the Languedoc, Midi Pyrenees and Aquitaine regions. Luckily for you (I trust), Derek has agreed to take over my monthly slot on the Flyer, so you can look forward to some fresh thoughts from him in December, when he will introduce himself to you.

Derek is not the only person new to Spectrum this month.  In view of the ever increasing client base in this area, the Spectrum directors have decided that we need an office, and with it an Office Manager, to run the administrative back-up for the three of us.  We are therefore delighted to welcome Jaime Donkin to our team.  Jaime brings her experience and qualifications in Business Management, Administration and Training to our aid, and is currently setting up the office, which is in Limoux.  We anticipate that we will be in a position to make a formal announcement of the opening of the office in time for Daphne’s next article, in December.

That’s about it then.  I may dust down the quill and burst back into print occasionally, maybe as cover for my colleagues when they are on holiday, but all that remains for me to do for now is to say a big thank you to those who have taken the time to read my articles.  I have always appreciated it.

Avg Antivirus

Many of you will be seeing a message from AVG asking you to update to the latest version, it’s a very good idea to upgrade so that you stay safe. But this time the update has a sting in its tale, without asking it installs the TRIAL version of AVG Internet security. The trial version  which runs out in 30 days and then wants you to pay. While paying to support the product is a good thing, forcing users to install the trial is a bit out of order.

To avoid the trial version, make sure you do a custom install and chose the BASIC version which is free. You will see this option when you click on the update message.

If you have ended up with the trial version of AVG Internet security or if your trail has run out and you do not want to pay, then you will need Downgrade back to the Basic free version.

Go to the Control Panel, click on Programs and Features or uninstall a program, find avg in the list, click on it and then click on uninstall/change on the toolbar at the top. Then choose to Downgrade if you see the option or click uninstall then choose to go back or convert to the basic free version.

If it all goes wrong and you accidentally remove Avg don’t worry you can download it again from www.avg.com

Double Your Protection.

I’ve seen a growing trend in people only running a Malware scanner like Malwarebytes or spybot and having no anti virus. This is a very risky policy and about the easiest way I know to get infected. Anti virus alone is not enough, anti malware alone is not enough but both together gives you a good level of protection.

If you are seeing popup advertising over the page you are trying to see, adverts in strange places, searches that only end up in an advert or another search on a strange web site, then you almost certainly have an infection.

If you think you might have an infection DO NOT leave it, it will not go away on its own. Run your anti malware scan immediately, if it does not find anything run your anti virus scan. If you are still having problem then it more serious and a more advanced scan is needed. In this situation you can download ADWcleaner from www.toolslib.net then run a scan and then a clean.

NOTE: Please remember what Trial means on a computer. It means you agree to try the full version and then PAY for it when the trial ends. The important bit is the word PAY! A trial is not the route to a free version.

If you need help or have any questions about your computer please give me a call or send me an email for advice.

Bridge problem

You have bid to an excellent contract - seven diamonds. Now you have to make it! The defence lead the unhelpful King of clubs. Now what is your plan?

J 4 3

Your hand

K Q 6 4

Solution.

You can make three ruffs in hand and four trump tricks, three spade tricks and the Ace and King of hearts. You will need one more trick from somewhere. Here’s a plan: ruff the lead and draw trumps. Now cash the Ace and King of hearts. If the Queen drops, you are home. If it doesn’t, you ll just have to finesse that ten of spades in Dummy. The finesse has a 50% chance and a Queen dropping doubleton when you have seven cards in the suit is 16%. Combining the two gives you – 66% - your best chance.

In the last Flyer I wrote about getting ready for winter and as I write this it seems as though winter has arrived, with even a little snow forecast for the coming week.  Brrr. Do be sure to protect any potentially vulnerable plants.   The cold spell is due to pass however and it is still time for planting and transplanting.  Also a good time to add compost to you soil to improve soil structure and increase it's organic content.  If possible try and collect all the fallen autumn leaves and either add them to your compost heap or shed them as use directly as mulch.  You may well have started to feed birds for the winter by now, do remember to keep feeders regularly washed.

Two relatively unusual Mexican natives are providing November interest in the garden.  Amicia zygomeris comes from the mountains of Mexico, in our climate it is a herbaceous perennial with unusual glaucous green foliage on 2m annual stems and golden yellow flowers in October and November; the first severe frost will stop these and the dead stems can be cut back in late winter ready for the plant to regrow from the rootstock the following spring.  Dahlia imperialis also comes from the mountain regions of Mexico and Central America, it makes anual stems of  three to four metres topped with single pink flowers in November, again these will be destroyed by the first severe frosts.  Both plants like full sun and a position sheltered from wind.

For any garden queries do get in touch with Gill Pound ( 04 68 78 43 81 or Gill@lapetitepepiniere.com ).
