    Bonjour

I have no exact idea what I could and couldn’t do if I became Prime Minister of UK, but I don’t think I would get up and say yes I can change this and that overnight.

So why does President Trump think it’s any different in America?  More a case of I will huff and puff and blow your legislation down?  It’s worked well so far with the introduction of Trumpdontcare.   Maybe he will walk away, saying it’s his ball and no one else can play with it?  There

Syria has now become a stage for President Trump to get something done.  Many of his other toys have been locked away so he’s been given access to missiles to play with.  It could be sabre rattling in the direction of North Korea and to show less of a connection to Russia?  Whilst there may be more proof of chemical weapons than there was of weapons of mass destruction, Britain has backed the USA action despite there being no UN resolution.

So Mr Trump wants to build a wall all along the US Mexican border, its 1989 miles long and he’s going to build “the best wall ever”.  Do you think it will be just a wall? What about housing developments and shopping-wall malls every 20 miles? What a tourist attraction! People could sell Mexican products. It could be like Manhattan but in a long strip, bonkers enough, so it could happen. Perhaps he will use Turnberry golf course and hotel, which he owns, as a model for part of it.

I understand why people want their national teams to support, such as Wales, Northern Ireland etc., but when it comes down to Euro2016 and the World Cup surely the United Kingdom would have a much better chance of actually winning something if they were putting a team together from the whole of the British Isles.  Wouldn’t it also allow people to behave as Brits and support the country as a whole?  I am sure civil wars have been fuelled by similar situations.  So good luck to Wales, Northern Island and England and hopefully someone will come to their senses and unify a team and a country.

I suppose if you continue that process you can end up with Europe

On the face of it there appears to be a need for a government of national unity to move everything forward, ideally that should be the people who made no comment before the referendum, but they are a little thin on the ground.  The best I can come up with is a joint-sort of-managing director role for Sir Alex Ferguson and Jeremy Clarkson at the top and you can make your fantasy parliament

Donc, the organisers of Rio 2016 Olympics seem to have largely survived the potential problems. Apart from maybe a robbery or two and a made-up robbery.  It’s a shame the IOC member accused of ticket touting hadn’t done it with about half a million more tickets.  Or perhaps they should have made each of the events a Pokemon Go PokeStop.  Then stadia would look more respectable.

Actually I just had a look at the ticket website and it appears you can buy best seats for about 250€ and maybe even seats at a quarter of that for the Athletics over the next few days.

It's now time to beware of those processionary caterpillars again. The caterpillars have orange brown backs with bluish grey bands and bluish grey protrusions in pairs at each segment, these protrusions have little bunches of hairs “growing” from them and it is the “hairs” that can be a danger. These irritant hairs contain a highly allergenic protein which in humans can cause reactions ranging from mild itching to anaphylactic shock, all contact with sensitive skin regions, your mouth, nose or eyes should be avoided. Be careful with your animals and dogs in particular may sniff them which should be avoided at all costs. If they eat them the dogs and other domestic animals may get necrosis or a greying  of the tongue and severe swelling may occur causing breathing difficulties.

Then they were to be sold to Egypt.  My ‘conspiracy theory’ brain thought - Egypt could be perhaps an intermediary and they may sell them on straightaway without even being entered on the CG. Everyone’s happy and Egypt makes a bit on the deal? Sounds reasonable.  Then the charter flight apparently falls from the sky.

So all athletes are under scrutiny for what they are putting in themselves to enhance performance and they try to disguise their emissions to cover it up. Now there is the car scandal and it’s not what they are putting in that’s important but once again they are masking results of what is coming out.

Vorsprung durch Technik roughly means "Advancement through technology” and that’s the way Audi have promoted itself for nearly 4 decades.  In a Super Bowl commercial in 2014 they substituted it for “Truth in engineering”. Oh yes.....

So the countries in south east of Europe are putting up the “house full” signs and things are turning nasty. Clearly whether you think granting millions of people the right to settle or not is unimportant, the problem has to be dealt with.

Hungary and Slovakia didn’t want any Muslims and I am sure the British government would like to say ‘Yes we will have all the doctors and nurses’. Then there is the Mayor of Beziers metaphorically out with his pitchfork trying to evict Syrians.  So with the wall being built around fortress Europe if the people still come in via Italy the result will be border checks between each country or people will end up where they want to be not where they have been “allocated”.

The migrant influx doesn’t appear to be being managed in Europe by the European government, clearly there are those that should be given asylum and those that should be sent back.  They should to be absorbed into each country based on some kind of a formula, perhaps density of population per square kilometre per country. Surely that’s the only argument the British Government have for saying we can have more (because they left the back door open for a few years and now have 5 million more people in the country than they will admit to).  And France has thousands of small villages which would benefit from a doubling of the population, and then of course there’s a shortage of 120,000 people for the vendange?  Surely many other European countries have large amounts of accommodation in rural villages which they need to fill up. There is the fact that the

A terrorist or as his lawyer is putting forward, a bungling train robber who happened to find a suitcase in a park in Belgium? Said suitcase contained guns ammunition, a knife and a mobile phone.  Yeah right, tire l'autre un. Surely for even thinking such a thing the lawyer should be drummed out of his fraternity.  It’s now come to light that he had been watching some jihadist You Tube clips whilst on the train, no doubt pre-programmed on an alarm on the phone.

Could you be doing a French person out of a job? Are you one of the people the public in France are scared of? Does France have the same couch potato mentality where benefit dependency takes the place of building your own self-worth and the need to work, no matter what work? Personally I feel if someone wants to work they will and they can do what they want as long as they get on with it and scale whatever hurdles are put in the way.

I am quite good at finding things via Google and I have been looking for further information on this story that was in Midi Libre:

A British man has died during a routine customs search on the A9 motorway at St-Jean-de-Védas just south of Montpellier. The incident happened

So it’s that time again, Eurovision I mean, and Austria seem to have pulled out all the stops this year with a bearded lady TV or something as their entry.

And hopefully the weather is hotting up as there are more and more things to do: this weekend (in fact starting today) is the Limoux brass or copper band event, with a certain James Morrison looking unlike the one you may be more familiar with. It’s a good reason for a drink anyway.

It’s that time of year to have a clear out and spring clean -  in the last Flyer there was a free vent hood which went immediately, so if you want to recycle it send a photo and text and you can give it away for free.  It’s got to be better than landfill.

So it appears that Francois Hollande will be spending more time with his ex-family by staying in his job and some would say that it was wreckless  making Segolene Royal environment minister. Apparently Miss Trierweiller wouldn’t let him do that before so perhaps the actress was just the fulcrum to remove Valerie so that he could build his cabinet as he wished.

As they already own Castorama and Brico Depot in France the deal will have to be aproved.  Sir Ian Cheshire, chief executive, has said that, if approved, the deal would "add a third, complementary strong business alongside Kingfisher's existing two successful brands in France."
What do you think MrBricolage could do better? send your thoughts and those of your friends and i will forward on to CEO Sir Ian and lets see if he likes any of them.

Tsar Vlad the Annexer has done it then, he says the Ukrainians acted illegally ousting a democratically elected government and now he has masterminded a 3 week turnaround on a referendum for Crimea. The Winter Olympics and Paralympics are over and the Russian parliament are due to vote this week on allowing other territories to join the Federation. He says he has no plans for taking back any part of Ukraine, but he hasn't said he wouldn’t want to push for a referendum in the eastern part of the country.

Free beer put in - that’s the subtitle I just saw on Sky News.   Yes of course - Vladimir Putin, but this is what the crazy ‘voice to text’ machine has come up with. Incidentally would it be such a mad idea just to broadcast the autocue, as all news is scripted and surely that would solve the persistent but humorous problems they have with it.

On matters Putin, doesn’t he have a point? It was a coup d’etat? There is now a Ukrainian government that’s unelected, so is that any better than a dictator using an army to take over a country? Well yes it probably is - but what they have they didn’t elect.

Kiev supposedly kicked off because they wanted stronger ties to Europe, they ousted Yanukovych who appeared to have had his hand in the till for quite some time or he was very adept at amassing fortunes.  He appears to be yet another communist leader with an outrageously ostentatious palace.  Vlad

I am not sure what went out and what didn’t on the last Flyer. It was a real hard one to put together and finally send, apologies. I will share briefly with you what happened. When I was maybe 90% finished creating the Flyer,  a video that was running stopped and there was an almighty screech, a noise which eventually I realised could only be stopped by hitting, in true Hitchhikers guide fashion, the large “off” button which should really be marked “do not press”!  I then spent best part of a day trying to restart it. Where I needed to be was in my Outlook email file and that just wouldn’t open and I gave up.  I called Bruce Taylor ( I should have done that at the beginning) and he talked me through what to do. He immediately knew my pst file needed replacing and he talked me through that too. Because there is so much stuff in my computer it took a long time. Then there was something else to do which took a similar amount of time (I mean half a day type timescale).  All in

It's that time again when there are Christmas markets smaller than the poster that advertises them, but there are also the Foires au Gras. If you missed Limoux, Belpech and Castelnaudary then try to get along to Rieux–Minervois Saturday (14th),  Mazères (Ariege) on Sunday (15th) or Carcassonne Sunday 22nd. The latter could be a good one because it ties in with the “Exotic weekend” December 20th to 22th, organised by the Aude young farmers. It’s a marche du terroir with tastings and some other silliness including pig races and grown men doing the sack race. Head to the car park of The Dome. Free entry.

Reuters have gone on to say that the Syrians have just made some early payments on the deal. Russia having lost Libya and Egypt as weapons export markets, the last thing they need is another Arab Spring losing them a good client. Or of course the other possibility is the chemical attack was done by rebels. It just seems strange that Bahar hasn't claimed that or has he and I missed it?

It’s slipping into a better time to be a seller of a property in France rather than a buyer that is if you are selling in Euros and transferring to Sterling.  There seemed to be little reason to me for the pound to be getting stronger, I suppose it could have been a Euro weakened by the Greek problems.  Now all that appears to have gone quiet perhaps the Euro is strengthening or the pound is about to be downgraded by ratings agencies or a bit of both?  However with Standard and Poors being sued by the US Department of Justice maybe they won’t want be changing anything.

The US Attorney General Eric Holder said of S&P's:

"This alleged conduct is egregious and it goes to the very heart

    Bonjour

Many times in conversations I have wanted to be able to refer to French entrepreneurs, along the same lines as Branson, Dyson, Sugar and Sinclair and it appeared to be as easy as naming a famous Belgian.  I was recently made aware of this chap Jacques Borel, strangely enough by the head honcho at Wetherspoons.   Apparently M. Borel is leading the charge to try to get the rate of VAT reduced in British public houses, as it is suggested that one of the reasons for the demise of this institution is that supermarkets are undercutting pubs.

Jacques Borel is the man who is running a VAT Club with the intention of getting a reduced rate in 2014. And

    Bonjour

Have you been consumed by the start of the sales? It took me years to realise that the dates and lengths of shop “sales” are government controlled. The winter sales which started today at 8am and not a moment before (I presume after is permissible) will last for a maximum of 5 weeks. This year that will take them to February 13th.  And they always start on the 2nd Wednesday of January unless the second Wednesday is the Jan 12th or after in which case it becomes the first Wednesday. There are a few national anomalies. Other than that its really simple and its actually supposed to be for retailers to clear overstocks, I am not sure it’s been like that in the “old country” for many a decade.

Toques et Clocher,  Saturday 16th in Limoux

This Saturday, Limoux is the place to be, unless you don’t like crowds or Chardonnay. the 22nd running of this event will i am sure see huge numbers descend on the town. based on reports from previous years it could well be 50 to 60,000 people. even if you aren’t planning on going its better you know it’s on because Limoux will i am sure be blockaded.

To get there you either need to go to Sieur D'Arques 2nd unit (oh what an evocative name) on the Route de Carcassonne in Limoux near to Leclerc and park, whereupon you will

    Bonjour,

With a bit of luck and a lot of hard work you should be getting this Flyer on Wednesday as normal.  I have a had a plan for a few months about changing the way the Flyer is both constructed and sent out. The idea was to run both the old and new systems in parallel for a while to test everything, but due to unforeseen circumstances everything has been done rather hurriedly in the last 8 days.  Hopefully I haven’t left anyone out or missed a link. If I have and to whomever that has happened I apologise. Things will get better.

With all of this system change you are largely saved from my international/local rant, however:58pick

    Bonjour!

Yes I know it was me who set this target of 5000 email addresses to receive the Flyer before the end of the year. I need your assistance to make it happen. If you each found half a new subscriber within the next week, then I'd be there. So if you know someone who could benefit from receiving the Flyer send it on to them and ask them to subscribe or if you are already receiving it via someone then email me and I will put you on the list.

The friendliness and helpfulness of Beziers Airport appears to be paying off for them. They have gained another new route - Paris Beauvais four times a week starting 15th April. If you book right now you can go for the weekend (at the end of April) for a total of 51.67€ plus the normal ancillary charges. Check out the Airport's newly revamped website.

I recently flew with the Spanish low cost airline Vueling and I found in trying to be low cost they have even more additions to their ticket price than Ryanair,

    Bonjour,

Are there any intrepid walkers out there who have a touch of "Wainwright" in them? I am looking for people who know walks in their area and who can write about them with perhaps a drawing of the route. It could possibly be done by sketching the route over a google map and scanning it. These walks can then be shared via The Flyer with others who don't know the area.

Watch out for maybe more than one Spring Plant Swap this year and if it's up your rue keep Good Friday free and start thinking about what you can bring and collect up the books you don’t need any longer to give to CSF. With any luck they should be in at least 5 locations in the region, more news later.

Is it just me who has problems with people who don't indicate when they are driving? I regularly make a left turn at a T junction and I wait patiently for all the cars that are coming in the lane I have to cross. I would say nine out of ten of them turn into the road that

    Bonjour!

So it's getting close to the Oscars and it certainly does make me want to go to the cinema. I received an email from the Colisée cinema in Carcassonne, with various attachments, one of which was a jpg entitled "we want sex". I worked my way through all the "pièce joint" and got to it, it turns out the film "Made in Dagenham" is called We want Sex Equality" in French. A snappy title isn't it? It's being shown there on Tuesday 8th March at 9.15pm, put it in your diary. The more of you go, hopefully the more VO films will be available. You will see below that Black Swan and The
